Step 1: Prepare Your Molds
Make sure your molds or clamshell containers are clean, completely dry, and at room temperature.
GW 494 is formulated for good mold release, so preheating molds generally isn't necessary.
Step 2: Melt the Wax
Heat Golden Wax® 494 gradually until it is completely melted and uniform.
A working temperature around 175–185°F provides sufficient heat for incorporating dye and fragrance. Avoid unnecessarily prolonged heating once the wax has fully melted.
Step 3: Add Candle Dye (Optional)
If using candle-safe dye, add it to the fully melted wax while it is hot enough for the colorant to dissolve or disperse properly.
Stir thoroughly until the color is completely incorporated.
Step 4: Add Fragrance Oil
Add your measured fragrance oil to the melted wax.
- Recommended starting fragrance range: 5–10% by weight
- Stir gently and thoroughly for approximately 2 minutes
- Make sure the fragrance is evenly incorporated throughout the wax
Always test each fragrance individually to determine the percentage that provides the best scent, appearance, and finished texture.
Step 5: Allow the Wax to Cool
After adding fragrance and dye, allow the wax to begin cooling toward its recommended pouring temperature.
Stir gently as needed to maintain an even mixture without introducing unnecessary air.
Step 6: Pour the Wax
Pour GW 494 at approximately 160°F (71°C) as a starting point.
Pour carefully into prepared molds or clamshells and allow the wax to cool naturally at room temperature.
Keep freshly poured melts away from fans, drafts, cold surfaces, and dramatic temperature changes.
Step 7: Allow the Melts to Harden
Leave the melts undisturbed until they are completely cool and firm.
For molded melts, carefully remove them once fully hardened. For clamshell melts, wait until the wax is completely cool before closing the packaging.
Step 8: Cure & Test
Allow your finished wax melts time to cure before evaluating their final fragrance performance. A few days is a useful starting point, while some fragrance oils may perform better with additional cure time.
Test the finished product in an appropriate wax warmer before selling or gifting it.

Wax Melts Are Too Soft
Why are my GW® 494 melts soft or difficult to remove from the mold?
