Halloween Candles
No Halloween party would be complete without some rather disturbing looking candles, skulls, sneering pumpkins, bones and those covered in elongated and exaggerated drips, evoking the Hollywood movies of the 1940’s.
Pick essential oils for Halloween and scents that suit your theme and don’t be afraid to layer them throughout the house. Find tips on how to do that in Layering Perfumes With Essential Oils - The Home Edition.
Candle making doesn’t have to be difficult, buying a simple kit makes it a doodle, or invest in a few good quality candle making supplies.
YOU WILL NEED:
- Candle Molds or glasses
- Wick holders
- Wicks of the right size and length for your molds
- Wick holders and appropriate fixative
- Double boiler or an old tin can and a saucepan (not used for food)
- Stainless steel stirrer or spoon
INGREDIENTS:
- Candle wax of choice, I prefer Soy wax (Amount depends on the size of your molds)
- Candle wax colorant (Amount depends on the size of your molds)
Perfect Potion essential oil blend in 250gms of (pre-melted weight) of wax
- 5 ml of Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)
- 5 ml of Vanilla Oleoresin Absolute (Vanilla planifolia)
- 10 ml of Lime Essential Oil (Citrus latifolia Tanaka)
Or,
10% of your choice of Fragrance oil - Double check the IFRA guidelines for your chosen fragrance oil though as while most have no restrictions in category 12, some do)!
SAFETY:
- Not for topical use
- Place on a fireproof candle plate
- Never leave burning candles unattended
- Keep out of the way of pets and children.
METHOD:
- Set up your chosen candle glasses or molds
- Fix the wicks in the right position, use wick holders if appropriate.
- Melt your chosen wax over a low to medium heat in a double boiler or a tin can set in a small saucepan of water, taking care not to scorch it
- Remove from the heat and add your essential oil or fragrance oil blend.
- Pour the molten wax into your mold or glasses, gently tap out any air bubbles and allow to set.
- Top up any gaps that appear once set.
- Trim your wick appropriately - about 1 cm is perfect.
- Place your candle on a fireproof candle plate before lighting.
- Be sure to never leave burning candles unattended.
- Keep out of the way of pets and children.
HOW TO USE:
- Place on a fireproof candle plate, away from potentially flammable materials and decorations.
- Place out of the path of draughts.
- Keep the wick trimmed appropriately.
- Keep out of the way of pets and children. (Consider using lanterns).
Halloween Diffuser Blends For A Vaporizing Diffuser
I have one of these vaporizing diffusers and they are perfect for Halloween, giving out that eerie stream of twisting and twirling fragrant vapor. It gives off a wonderfully spooky vibe, who needs dry ice when you have one of these?
Before we start looking at essential oils for Halloween for your vaporizer, just double check your individual manufacturer's instructions, because they do vary enormously. I have to add water to mine, some say add carrier oil and some nothing at all. Therefore, please follow your own manufacturers guidance for your vaporizing diffuser please.
For this reason this essential oil is UNDILUTED, do NOT use it on your skin (Topically).
YOU WILL NEED:
- Small measuring jug
- 10 ml dropper bottle
- Funnel
- Label
INGREDIENTS:
10 ml is approximately equal to 200 drops of essential oils.
- 4 ml Ginger Essential Oil (Zingiber officinale)
- 2 ml of Patchouli Essential Oil (Pogostemon cablin)
- 4 ml of Sweet Orange Essential Oil (Citrus sinensis L)
SAFETY:
Not For Topical Use -Take care not to get it on your skin, if you do, please wash thoroughly in warm soapy water. If irritation occurs, seek medical advice taking the clearly labeled bottle with you.
METHOD:
- Carefully measure out the essential oils
- Combine in the small measuring jug
- Using the funnel, decant into a 10 ml rubber top dropper bottle
- Label and date, clearly listing all the ingredients for safety reasons and marked clearly as ‘UNDILUTED’.
HOW TO USE:
- Follow your individual diffusers manufacturer's guidelines for specific instructions
- However, most read as adding to water, not exceeding the maximum level.
- Only use it for 60-90 minutes at a time and have a break for 30-60 minutes before switching it back on.
Halloween Cupcakes
Who doesn’t love a garish or gloriously gory cupcake for Halloween?
These are simple Vanilla cupcakes with buttercream icing flavored with Sweet Orange and Lime essential oils. Yes, if you are sensible, you CAN use essential oils for Halloween in your cooking. Find out more in Unlock Flavorful Wonders: A Beginner's Guide To Cooking With Essential Oils.
Color the cupcakes and icing to suit your party theme and even be adventurous with the cupcake flavors if you like.
The Buttercream Icing recipe is really generous to allow for a decadent and unhealthy dollop of luscious icing. It’s only Halloweeen once a year, right?
YOU WILL NEED:
- Mixing Bowl
- Muffin tins
- Cupcake Liners
- Handheld Mixer
- Spoon
- Oven gloves
- Toothpick
- Wire Rack
INGREDIENTS:
FOR THE CUPCAKES
- 2 ½ cups all purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups white granulated sugar
- ½ cup butter at room temperature
- 2 eggs at room temperature
- 2 ½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 ¼ cups milk at room temperature
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
Optional - Food coloring
FOR THE ICING:
- 7 cups powdered sugar
- 2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature
- 3 tbsp heavy cream or whipping cream
- 1/2 tsp fine salt
- 5 drops of Sweet Orange Essential Oil (Citrus sinensis L)
- 5 drops of Lime Essential Oil (Citrus latifolia Tanaka)
Optional - Food coloring
SAFETY:
- Do not exceed the amounts of essential oils stated in this recipe please.
- Supervise children making cupcakes and icing.
METHOD:
CUPCAKES
- Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C)
- Line your muffin tins with spooky themed cupcake liners.
- Mix the flour, baking powder together and set aside
- Cream the softened butter and the white sugar.
- Add the room temperature eggs one at a time and combine.
- Alternate by adding small amounts of the flour mixture and then the milk mixture and so on.
- Repeat the process until all of the ingredients have been thoroughly incorporated.
- Make sure to only fill the muffin cups two-thirds full with batter, or they will spill over.
- Bake for 16-18 minutes.
- Check that a toothpick comes out clean when inserted, if so, they are done.
- Cool in the tins set onto a wire rack and remove once cool.
- In the meantime make your icing.
BUTTERCREAM ICING
- Take the 2 cups of unsalted butter and beat until smooth
- Add your essential oils and the salt, mix on a low speed.
- Taking your time, on the lowest speed setting, gradually add in 7 cups of powdered sugar. (Cover your stand mixer with a cloth, if it looks like a massacre in a sugar factory).
- Halfway through adding the powdered sugar add in 3 tbsp of heavy cream or milk to slacken it off and make it easier to mix.
- Keep mixing until everything is fully incorporated and you have the desired consistency.
- If you are adding any color, do it now.
- Pipe onto your spooky cupcakes in a decorative manner.

Fragranced Party Ware
Often, we spend fistfuls of dollars on the perfect party and tableware to stage an immaculate theme, but are we missing a trick here?
Have you ever thought of adding fragrance and using essential oils for Halloween to your party ware and linen to support the scents cape of your party?
It is super easy to scent disposable napkins and tablecloths, and not that much harder to scent fabric versions either.
Imagine, as you pick up a napkin, the burst of a wonderful fragrance to really enhance the party atmosphere. For Halloween, those food based fragrance oils like Pumpkin Spice and Hot Baked Apple Pie are perfect choices for this.
For fresher themes, think those citrus based essential oils and even adding in a hint of spices like Nutmeg and Ginger. Orange and Ginger is always a winner and stimulates people appetites.
Simply take your paper napkins and tablecloths and pop them in a tightly lidded plastic container with a cotton pad or two lightly dampened in your choice of fragrance oil or diluted essential oil blend. Leave for at least a week before the party and air for at least 6-8 beforehand.

YOU WILL NEED:
- 50ml glass spray bottle
- Measuring jug
- Funnel
- Stainless steel spoon or stirrer
- Label
Halloween Partyware Essential Oil Blend
- 49 ml of Rubbing Alcohol
- 50 drops of Ginger Essential Oil (Zingiber officinale)
- 50 drops of Mandarin Essential Oil (Citrus reticulata)
- 20 drops of Anise Star Essential Oil (Illicium verum)
SAFETY:
- Not for topical use on the skin - Take care not to get it on your skin, if you do, please wash thoroughly in warm soapy water. If irritation occurs, seek medical advice taking the clearly labeled bottle with you.
- Follow IFRA safety dilution rates for category 10a for individual fragrance oil dilutions
- Not to be used for plates or dishes that you will eat from.
METHOD:
- Warning - Rubbing alcohol is flammable, do not work near naked flames or heat sources.
- Measure your rubbing alcohol out.
- Add your essential oils and combine well.
- Using a funnel decant into a 50ml glass spray bottle.
- Label clearly, listing all ingredients for safety reasons and clearly annotate as ‘FLAMMABLE LIQUID’ .
HOW TO USE:
- Spray a cotton pad or cotton cloth until slightly damp.
- Layer between your party tableware in a large plastic container.
- Lid tightly and leave for at least one week.
- Check the intensity of the fragrance a couple of days in - you may wish to add more (Follow IFRA data please).
- On the day of the party, open the box and air the partyware for 6-8 hours beforehand.
Scented Tables Cape And Centerpieces
We go to such lengths for Halloween parties, decorations, costumes, food, candy, candles and those incredible tables capes.
Tables capes can be flat and boring if they don't engage all of our senses. It is not just how something looks, how it feels and its textures are important too. So too, is its fragrance and that is where we can fully utilize essential oils for Halloween.
For my wedding, we decorated a hall in fresh tree boughs. What I had not accounted for when we opened the doors, was the delicious, natural, fragrant bomb that unfolded through them. Everyone commented on how amazing it smelt as they entered the room. Scents create the strongest memories for us. It pays to use it wisely.
If you have centerpieces of silk or fabric flowers, leaves or pumpkins, why not add some essential or fragrance oils directly to them to elevate the whole kaboodle.
Tables capes can include scented candles, candle diffusers or simply bowls of finger water laced with sumptuous essential oils.

- 9ml of Witch Hazel or Rubbing Alcohol (You want something that will evaporate off quickly).
- 3 drops of Nutmeg Essential Oil (Myristica fragrans)
- 4 drops of Palo Santo Essential Oil (Bursera graveolens)
- 3 drops of Cinnamon Essential Oil (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)
SAFETY:
- Not for topical use - Take care not to get it on your skin, if you do, please wash thoroughly in warm soapy water. If irritation occurs, seek medical advice taking the clearly labeled bottle with you.
- Highly Flammable if using Rubbing Alcohol.
- If using Fragrance Oils - Follow IFRA safety dilution rates for individual fragrance oil dilutions and applications.
METHOD:
- Measure out the rubbing alcohol.
- Add the essential oils and combine well.
- Using a funnel, decant into a 10ml glass dropper bottle.
- Label clearly, listing all ingredients for safety reasons and if using Rubbing Alcohol clearly annotate as ‘FLAMMABLE LIQUID.
HOW TO USE:
- Do a test patch first to see if the product will stain your chosen items.
- Add a few drops to your silk flowers, leaves or fabric pumpkins.
- Allow to dry fully and evaporate for at least 24 hours before placing near candles/ naked flames/ heat sources.
- Refresh as needed.
Halloween After Party - Wind Down Lotion
Well, after all that raucous fun you are bound to be exhausted and slightly zombified. Why not round off the night with our Wind Down Lotion? Slather yourself in it liberally and fall right into bed, to sleep like the dead. We promise not to haunt your dreams…. Maybe!
This is a super easy and fast absorbing lotion, designed to help you wind down, relax and drift off into zombie land….er….sorry, dreamland. It is the perfect way to round off the events of this amazing occasion with these glorious essential oils for Halloween.

- 120 ml Aqueous Cream or Water Base Lotion
- 20 ml Glycerine
- 20 ml Rosewater
- 14 ml of Rosehip Oil
- 20 ml of Argan Oil
Wind Down Lotion Essential Oil Blend
- Based on 3% (healthy adult) safety dilution in 200 ml = 120 drops or 6 ml
- 80 drops of Lavender Essential Oil (Lavandula angustifolia)
- 20 drops of Patchouli Essential Oil (Pogostemon cablin)
- 20 drops of Vetiver Essential Oil (Vetiveria zizanoides)
SAFETY:
- Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.
METHOD:
- Measure out your carrier oils and add your essential oils and mix well
- Measure out your Aqueous cream or water base and add the Glycerine and Rosewater
- Add your oil mix and slowly and mix well, a hand held blender is brilliant for this.
- Using a funnel decant into a bottle.
- Label clearly, listing all ingredients for safety reasons, also add the date.
- Do a 24-48 hour patch test before using.
HOW TO USE
- Patch test guys, or the ghouls will get you!
- Slather on liberally avoiding intimate and eye areas.
- Retire for the night and have wicked dreams.
